October 4, 1968 – August 2, 2021
Doug and Darci are sad to announce the untimely passing of their most amazing mom, Melodie.
Mel was pre-deceased by her parents, Paul and Theresa Thomas, her brother Milton and her brothers-in-law Bobby and Rod. She leaves to mourn her passing her children Douglas (Jaden) and Darci (Addie), their father, Dwayne, cherished grandson Daison, her special great-nephew Quinton, her siblings, Maureen, Lorraine (Howard), Carol, and Randy as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mom, Grammy, Melodie, Mel, My Girl, Auntie Mel, Duck, Ajidy, Aunty Poppety, Sis … she was known by many names and was a friend to all. Each of us is completely heartbroken that such an honest and helping person was taken from us so soon. She lived 19, 296 days and could have lived twice that if our love alone could have saved her. She grew up and lived in Winnipeg her whole life with some of her favourite memories at the cabin in Traverse Bay and at Albert Beach. She was the best Auntie/ Sister, always babysitting and visiting until she had her son Douglas and daughter Darci, whom she dedicated her life to. Melodie loved all her family to no end and she and her children were a shining light for her parents in their last years. She made sure to share with her children how much she loved not only her parents and brother Milton but all of those lucky enough to call her family. Her special great nephew Quinton lived with her for a number of years and was loved equally to her own children. She spent many years working with children as an Education Assistant and loved helping the kids and teachers grow and develop. She spent her spare time beading and developed her creations into her own business these past few years. Grammy was so excited to have her grandson Daison arrive and while they shared only a few days together on this earth, she was filled with unconditional love for him.
It is simply impossible to say in words how much love she gave and how much love was returned to her, as we all remember many, many times we laughed with her, cried with her, her steadfast presence and her gratitude for all the little things in her life. She made the best soup, the best bannock, the best beading, and she was absolutely the best sister not only to her biological siblings but to her cousins, nieces and nephews. So many of us referred to her as ‘like a sister’. Melodie’s spirit name is Standing Bear and she was that person who walked through life with the courage to protect her own, and all children, as no other. We take comfort in the fact that while she has gone on ahead of us, she is undoubtedly celebrating with all our relatives who have gone before us and she will be diligent in continuing to guide us through our dreams, preparing for when we shall see her again.
Love you Mom. Love you Grammy. Love you Mel… Love you.
Viewing will be 11-12 Monday, August 9, 2021 at Voyage Funeral Home 220 Hespeler with Interment to follow at 2:00 pm at St. Marguerite’s Church in Traverse Bay.

My heartfelt condolences to all of Mel’s family and friends. I had the pleasure of working with Mel at Gladstone School. She was a quiet but caring Educational Assistant who was fantastic with the children. In the staff room she loved to share stories about her children and family. She was a talented artist – her bead work was so beautiful! Her memory will live on when wearing one of her creations. Her beautiful smile and kindness will be missed! May your treasured memories help ease your sorrow!
I worked with Mel at Gladstone School for many years. She was an amazing EA and an even better person. I’m so sorry for your loss. She will truly be missed.
On behalf of the staff at Gladstone School, we are so saddened to hear of Melodie’s passing. She was able to return to work for a short time this year, and though short, we were able to see the amazing generosity, kindness and spirit that you mention. Our sincerest condolences.
Sending my sincere condolences to all of Melodie’s family. Mel and I worked together for many years. She loved to talk about her children, her family, her times at the cabin, her beadwork and the arrival of her first grandson. Mel was kind, genuine and had a great sense of humour. I will miss laughing with her.
